Lausanne, Switzerland, 10 April 2025 – In a landmark moment for The World Games Family, the International Olympic Committee Executive Board (IOC EB) announced on Wednesday 9 April that the compound mixed team archery event will be added to the programme of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.
The decision marks a significant achievement for the sport and a powerful validation of The World Games as a vital stepping stone toward Olympic inclusion.
Archery target compound mixed team has been part of The World Games since 2017 and will feature again at the upcoming edition in Chengdu, China in August 2025.
IWGA President José Perurena commented: “This is a proud moment for the IWGA and for The World Games. The addition of compound archery to the Olympic Games is a testament to the platform our event provides for sports to grow, gain visibility, and ultimately reach the Olympic stage. We congratulate World Archery and all the athletes who helped bring this discipline to global recognition.”
The inclusion of compound archery brings the total number of Olympic archery medal events to six and highlights the influence of The World Games in shaping the future of sport.
This isn’t an isolated example. The IOC also confirmed on Wednesday that Speed Climbing — another discipline featured in The World Games — will continue as an Olympic event at LA28 following its debut in Paris 2024.
“These developments confirm what we have long believed,” Perurena added.
“The World Games are not just a celebration of sport, but a catalyst for Olympic dreams. Our event is where future Olympic champions begin their journey.”
The IWGA is proud to continue supporting Member Federations on the road to Olympic recognition and looks forward to showcasing the world’s best in compound archery and many other dynamic sports at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu.
