Casting sport
Disciplines: Accuracy and distance casting with different angling tackles.
The sport originates from angling. It takes place on sport grounds or grass fields, using modified angling rods made for fly or plug casting. The main difference between fly casting and plug casting is that in fly casting, the weight of the line carries the artificial fly through the air, whereas in spinning the weight of the plug at the end of the line gives casting distance.
There are several formats, where athletes are either competing for greatest accuracy in hitting small circular targets at a range of distances from the casting point, or for greatest distance. A variety of casting techniques is used in the different formats. In accuracy formats, points are scored based on the result of the cast on the circular target. In the event of a tie, the better time decides the winner which is very exciting, especially for the young casters and spectators
Casting sport has a long tradition. In 1864, the first reported competition was held in Kalamazoo, New York State, the first competition in Europe took place 1881 in London. During the Olympic Games 1908 in London a fly-accuracy-event was demonstrated.
Casting sport was in The World Games program 1981–2005; the ICSF, former ICF, was one of the founders of The World Games.
