Tug of War – teams compete in test of strength

Discipline at The World Games 2025: Outdoor

Tug of War is one of the most ancient sports known to man, with evidence of its practice across the ancient world including Ancient Greece, Egypt and China. It’s a very archaic sport, easy to understand and strictly committed to strength in its purity.

Two teams of eight pull on opposite ends of a rope. The goal is to bring the rope 4 metres in one direction against the force of the opposing team’s pull. At The World Games, the sport is performed in men, women and mixed-team categories.

One team attempts to pull the other one towards themselves, such that the marking on the rope closest to their opponent crosses the centre-line. When the marking on the rope crosses the centre-line, the pull is finished.

The qualification round has 2 pulls per contest; three points go to a team winning both pulls. If both teams win a pull the contest is tied: 1 point per team. In the knock-outs, the contests are best of 3, so the first team to win 2 pulls is declared the winner.
