Roller Sports – three contrasting roller skate disciplines
Disciplines at The World Games 2025: Speed Skating, Inline Freestyle, Inline Hockey
Inline skates – roller skates with wheels (usually 4) set in single line under a frame – are used in all three Roller Sport disciplines included in The World Games. There are variations in design according to the specific sport being practiced. All three disciplines, with classes for both women and men, have great spectator appeal with the speed and maneuverability that these skates provide.
Speed Skating is a competitive indoor sport taking place on road or a track (200 m laps). The race events have different distances (200 m to 15,000 m) and different formats (sprint races, points races, time trials, eliminations and point eliminations). Speed Skating is a very fast-paced discipline with a lot of action during each race. It combines physical strength and agility with a tactical mind; in elimination races in particular, with groups of athletes skating together, clever tactics play a large part in achieving success.
Inline Hockey resembles Ice Hockey in many respects. Teams compete in a rink with a hard surface, using ice hockey sticks to shoot a hard, plastic puck into their opponent's goal to score points. Five players from a team are on the rink at any one time. Unlike Ice Hockey, body-checking is not permitted. The sport is very fast-paced and free-flowing.
Inline Freestyle: two forms – Slalom Classic and Speed Slalom. Competitors skate through a series of cones, laid in a line on a flat, hard surface, with breathtaking agility. Many kinds of slalom moves and tricks are incorporated into the action. In Classic, the athletes skate to a musical arrangement, and the judges assign scores on the base of technical and artistic criteria. In Speed, the winner is the fastest through the course.
Not on the programme at The World Games 2025: Roller Sports – Artistic
Artistic Skating is a dynamic and engaging indoor sport, similar to figure skating but done on roller skates (not inline skates). There are two disciplines, both combining artistry with refined strength and physical agility.
In Free Skating, a single man or woman incorporates jumps, spins and footwork into programmes set to music. The competitors perform both a Short and a Long programme. The Short programme has a set of elements the skater must perform. In the Long programme, skaters are free to perform the elements they prefer, designing their own performance.
In Couple Dance, two skaters perform various lifts and dance elements set to music. The competitors perform both a Style Dance and a Free Dance. The number of required elements in a style dance is 4, whilst the number in a free dance is 7.
In both disciplines, the athlete/couple with the highest combined score of difficulty and execution at the end of the two performances wins the competition.
