Life Saving – vital rescue skills in competition form

Discipline at The World Games 2025: Pool

Life Saving is a sport practised in the pool and on the beach and in the ocean. The sport consists of a series of competition disciplines intended to develop and demonstrate lifesaving skills, fitness and motivation, replicating common rescue techniques, including manikin (i.e. victim) ‘carry’ with or without fins, manikin tow using a rescue tube, the rescue medley, a combination of freestyle, dive and swim underwater to a manikin and a ‘super lifesaver’ combining the carry and tow disciplines in the same competition.

The pool competition is a timed competition. Athletes swim as fast as possible from one side of the pool to the other side, completing the pre-defined distance. Some events require the competitor to swim underwater and surface with a manikin retrieved from the floor of the pool. Events featured at The World Games are Manikin Carry (with and without fins), Manikin Tow, Rescue Medley, Super Lifesaver and Relays.
