Sport Climbing – agility and speed on a vertical wall
Discipline at The World Games 2025: Speed
Sport Climbing has become one of the most popular spectator sports of The World Games; the agility and speed of ascent achieved by the very best in the game is unbelievable!
Secured from above by an auto-belay system, climbers ascend a vertical wall, 15 m high, fitted with hand- and foot-holds.
There are three categories of competition at The World Games 2025, all for both men and women: Relay, Single and Single 4.
There are two identical parallel routes on the wall for Single with two athletes competing simultaneously and four identical routes for four athletes in Single 4 and Relay. The aim in the Speed discipline is to be the fastest to reach the top of the 15 m wall.
Men and women compete on standardised routes which are not modified between rounds. Quite simply, competitors compete (race) against one another with the aim of the fastest times moving on to the next round from Qualification, and then by beating your opponents in the Finals rounds to secure a medal.
Other disciplines:
Lead, where athletes have to read an overhanging route and anticipate the sequences of movements to climb a 15 m high wall within 6 minutes. The wall is designed to enable different routes to be set during the competition. Athletes are ranked based on their progression on the route.
Boulder: athletes are faced with a range of climbing problems on different angles of 4 m high walls, with safety mats below, where the holds vary in size, shape, and materials. Athletes must complete as many as possible of the ‘boulders’ with the lowest number of attempts within a set time.
