SAMBO – a combat sport with multiple techniques

Discipline at The World Games 2025: Combat

SAMBO is a mixed martial arts sport, performed mostly indoors on a SAMBO mat. Introduced originally in the 1920s to improve hand-to-hand combat by military personnel, the sport is a unique mix of combat sports and martial arts of the world. In SAMBO ("self-defence without weapons"), many people around the world can recognise sports styles and traditions of their own countries in this distinctive type of physical and mental challenge.

Combat SAMBO allows striking and grappling. Offensive techniques like punches, kicks, elbows, knees, headbutts and groin strikes can also be used, in addition to throws, holds, chokes and locks.

In The World Games there are competitions in different weight classes for both men and women, and also a Combat Mixed Team class. Bouts are decided by score, or submission of the opponent.
