Underwater Sports – a big variety of underwater challenges
Disciplines at The World Games: Finswimming, Freediving
Finswimming is the fastest of all swimming sports, and accordingly spectacular. It is swimming with a monofin or with two (bi-)fins, either on the surface using a snorkel or underwater by holding one's breath. There are 3 categories of Finswimming events in The World Games: Apnoea, Surface and Bi-fins.
Apnoea (or Apnea) is underwater swimming using a mask or goggles, a monofin and whilst holding one’s breath. Bi-Fins: athletes swim on the surface of the water with a mask or goggles, snorkel and a pair of fins, using a crawling style. Surface is swimming on the surface of the water using a mask or goggles, snorkel and monofins.
Freediving will be contested in the category Dynamic Apnoea, where athletes swim their maximum horizontal distance, underwater whilst holding their breath, using any swimming technique. There are two classes, for both men and women: with no swimming aids, and with either monfin or bi-fins. There are also separate competitions in this category for athletes with defined impairments.
