IWGA Launched The World Games Channel as the heart of its media strategy

Discover the World of Sports

BELEK/TURKEY (07/04/2014). The International World Games Federation (IWGA) launched its own video channel on Monday under the tag: “Discover the World of Sports.” The Word Games Channel will be an additional media platform for the top events of its member associations. During the Annual General Meeting of the IWGA in Belek/Turkey, the TV & New Media Coordinator of the IWGA, Hagen Bossdorf, presented “the heart of our media strategy” to the representatives of the 36 member associations. The new President of the IWGA José Perurena took the opportunity to announce the official start of the channel.

The first events to be watched on the webpage channel.theworldgames.org will be the Orienteering European Skiing Championships in Tyumen/Russia and the Waterskiing World Cup in Mandalah/Australia. Other events scheduled for April will be competitions in Dance Sport, Billiards Snooker, Sports Climbing und Powerlifting. In general The World Games Channel contains: live streams of current events, highlight shows of events sorted by Date & Sports, more than 100 highlight-videos of The World Games 2013, a detailed list of upcoming events and the presentation of the athlete of the month.

Hagen Bossdorf explained the strategy: “We intend to strengthen the brand The Word Games and to raise more awareness of our sports in the run-up to The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw/Poland.” He emphasized this as an advantage for the federations, too. IWGA provides an additional media channel to showcase their sports for a growing target group. We would also like to be perceived as a family in the years between The World Games." Hagen Bossdorf said. The channel will also increase the attractiveness of the multi sports event for partners and sponsors. IWGA President Jose Perurena emphasized that he wants to increase the media profile of the Games and make them a true showcase for alternative sports. “The World Games Channel will be a permanent platform that makes our events accessible and supports our member federations to present their outstanding events and best athletes.

From the idea to the launch, it did not take more than a year. The IWGA approved the project in May 2013. It was presented to member federations during the IF Forum of Sport Accord in November 2013. IWGA received the support of member federations which was vital for the implementation of the next steps. IWGA CEO Joachim Gossow: “The decisive factor here is close cooperation with the Federations who feed their video content into the channel.” Programming and design were developed by the experts of JayKay, a webdesign company in Spain. Studio Mitte from Berlin did the postproduction und set up the archive.

The programme will be promoted over all the media channels of the IWGA. Hagen Bossdorf: “But we also reckon on getting the support through the webpages and social media platforms of our member federations. We are opening an additional window for our federations to be on air and in people’s consciousness.”
