New IWGA President Elected at the Annual General Meeting in Belek/Turkey

Jose Perurena Lopez: “We Will Take The World Games to the Next Level.” 


Belek/Turkey (07/04/2014). José Perurena Lopez (Spain) will head the International World Games Association (IWGA) until 2018. At the Annual General Meeting of the IWGA in Belek/Turkey delegates elected the IOC member as the new President of the IWGA. He is the successor of Ron Froehlich who served as the President since 1992. The delegates of the 36 member federations unanimously appointed Ron Froehlich by acclamation as the Honorary President of the IWGA.

José Perurena, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said after his election: “Thank you very much for your trust. Together we will take The World Games to the next level.” The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw Poland will be the first edition under the responsibility of the new President.

Describing his goals José Perurena added: “My plan for the future years is having an agreement with the IOC to use our multisports event for the possible alternatives of the future sports that go to the Olympics." Perurena is also the President of the International Canoe Federation, which had two disciplines Canoe Polo and Canoe Marathon in The World Games 2013 in Cali/Colombia.

Mr Perurena won the IWGA presidency in a vote 24-12 over Harald Vervaecke of the International Life Saving Federation. 


The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
