Day 9 at The World Games and it was the day of the team sports. But we mustn’t forget that it was a good day for Brazil as well. So, let’s go the beach. The beach was brought to the Marsowe Fields in Worclaw. The women’s team from Brazil, reigning World Games Champions, won both sets in their final match against Argentina.
The men decided to entertain the spectators in a more thrilling way and decided their final in the shootout. Croatia won the first set. But the champions from Cali 2013 came back and tied the match. Brazil’s Diogo Vieira’s big save in the shutout secured the win for his team and the moments of joy by rolling over the sand. Brazil doubled its number of gold medals within one afternoon.
Meanwhile, team Austria followed the idea “better late than never”. The Jiu-Jitsu twins Mirneta and Mirnesa Becirovic retained their title from 2013 in Women’s Duo. In the Men’s Duo final Nicolaus Bichler and Sebastian Vosta performed best, winning the second gold on Saturday.
The Tug of War women from Chinese Taipei followed the same track and pulled indoor to gold in the 540kg category, after beating China in the final 2-0. The squad won their first gold medal at TWG for Chinese Taipei. South Africa won bronze. In the men’s 700kg category, the team from Switzerland secured the gold medal by beating the Netherlands 3-0.
The athletes of the Czech Republic at The World Games consider themselves as a team or maybe as a crew, for their National Olympic Committee chartered a boat on the river Odra last night where they celebrated their successes in Wroclaw. It was well worth the early celebration because the Czech Inline Hockey team won gold, being the successor of the USA gold medalists in Cali 2013. The Czechs beat France 5-1 in the final.
There is one slight chance that there will be another medal celebration on the boat on Sunday. The bronze match in Floorball sees the Czech Republic play Finland. Doesn’t this ring a bell? Yes it does. In the first Floorball match in the history of The World Games, Finland played Czech Republic and won 4-2. By the way, Petri Kettunen was the Coach of Finland and celebrated the win of last year’s World Championship. He is now in charge of the Czech Team!
