Qualifications for TWG 2017 about to start
The process of qualifying athletes for The World Games will start on Thursday, 13 August. The 2015 Royal World Cup in Muaythai, Bangkok (THA) will be the first qualification event for The World Games 2017 in Poland. The whole process for all the 31 sports on the programme in Wroclaw will be completed in January 2017.
Within the next 16 month there are more than 200 hundred different qualification events scheduled. IWGA President José Perurena stressed the importance of this process managed by the international federations: “Our member federations must bring the very best athletes in their sports and disciplines. We want to demonstrate that our sports are on the same level as the Olympic sports.”
For example, the gold medalists in the different weight classes at the 2015 Royal World Cup will be nominated by the Muaythai Federation (IFMA) for the multi-sport event in Wroclaw/Poland. Further qualifying events announced by IFMA will be the World Championships in 2016 and the Asian Indoor Martial Art Games, Ashgabat (TKM), in 2017.
Qualification for The World Games follows a simple principle: only the top athletes or teams in every sport or discipline qualify for participation. Unlike the Olympics, invitations to and management of the competition are in the hands of the international sports federations.
A total of 27 sports will be showcased at the multi-sport event from 20 to 30 July 2017 in Wroclaw. In addition to the official programme, four invitational sports competitions will also be showcased. About 180 medal events will be presented at the tenth edition of The World Games. The International World Games Association expects that around 3,600 athletes from about 100 countries will strive for gold in 2017.
The next qualification event on the agenda will be 34th FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart (GER).
