On-Site Visits of IWGA Bid Evaluation Committee for The World Games 2021
Next Stop: Birmingham, Alabama
The International World Games Association started to assess the bids from three potential host cities for The World Games 2021 by first visiting the city of Ufa in The Russian Republic of Bashkortostan at the beginning of October. This Thursday the committee is continuing with its on-site visits by going to Birmingham/USA. The IWGA delegation will be headed by Vice-President Max Bishop. The USA already hosted the first edition of The World Games in 1981 in Santa Clara.
During the visit to Alabama’s largest city, meetings will take place with the responsible representatives from Birmingham to discuss the contents of the bidding document. The team will inspect hotels, infrastructure and of course the existing sport venues, too. One of the principles of The World Games is that there is no obligation to build new venues. Encouraging the use of existing facilities should make the Games more sustainable.
About 20 venues are needed to stage this multisport event. The programme of The World Games comprises more than 25 sports and draws 4500 participants from around 100 countries.
To conclude its on-site visits, the Bid Evaluation Committee will go to Lima/Peru, the third candidate city for The World Games 2021, at the end of October. The decision on which city will be the successor to Wroclaw (Poland), host of the 10th edition in 2017, will be announced in January 2015.
