More about the mascot contest
In total, 620 works were entered to the contest, among which the jury selected 50 proposals for the semi-final. Five final projects were chosen again by the jury of the contest. “In this contest we are choosing a hero of our games. A character with which both the inhabitants of the city and our guests may identify. It should integrate but it should also be a souvenir for all people who will be visiting Wroclaw during the games,” explained Piotr Przygonski, the president of the World Games Wroclaw 2017 company.
A member of jury, the chairperson of the Commission on Sport and Recreation of the City Council of Wroclaw, Renata Mauer Różańska, emphasises that the mascot has to be “huggable” and positive, and that children are always the best reviewers.
“The mascots which evoked positive emotions were always the most popular ones.
I brought a mascot from each Olympic Games for my little daughter, but also all my friends, when they found out that I was going to the games, were asking me to bring them the mascot,” said the winner of two Olympic Games in shooting.
Paweł Czuma, communication director of the www.wroclaw.pl portal, was delighted with children's creativity and he emphasised that the selection of 5 final works was a really difficult task: “We spent hours looking at the works and we were dismissing other proposals with a heartache. Ms Renata had very accurate arguments and it was impossible to disagree with her.”
Another member of jury, vice-president of Se-ma-for film studio Adam Ptak admitted that he likes all of the final works, however his favourite ones are those more abstract – a bee and an owl-cat.
"While selecting the final works, I was looking at everything from the animator’s point of view – the characters should have e.g. sufficiently long arms and legs. The winning proposition will require adequate treatment before preparing the full-size model, but it will become an inspiration for us and we will do our best to make a maximally accurate copy", said Mr Ptak.
The Contest Board also included Mr Piotr Socha, graphic designer and illustrator of books for kids, and a sportswoman, Ms Maja Włoszczowska. They could not attend the conference due to professional duties. However, Piotr Socha participated in the debate and advised selection of works which – from his point of view – should be diverse and extraordinary.
Maja Włoszczowska sent her votes via Internet. She emphasised that it was difficult to select the semi-final 50, not to mention the difficulties with selecting the 5 favourites. She added that she was surprised at the large number of works that entered the contest and wished Wroclaw to have the most beautiful mascot in the history of the World Games.
The jury justified its choice with the following:
Bee – it symbolises pro-ecological activities, concern about the natural environment. Bee extinction is nowadays a problem for many countries. It is hard-working but it may attack when provoked – as befit a true sportsperson.
Lion – it appears in the coat of arms of Wroclaw, it is known from the logo of Wroclaw ZOO, it is associated with a strong and athletic individual.
Hansel and Gretel (Jaś i Małgosia) – townhouses in Wroclaw, and the drawn characters also symbolise Wroclaw as a place of positive meetings.
Dwarf – a symbol of Wroclaw, likeable, helpful, full of good energy, he can be found in Wroclaw in various versions.
Owl-cat – it is an abstract connection, but children often need a not-obvious look at the world what should be respected and appreciated.
The selected works are equivalent.
