Magdalena Nowakowska - Athlete Of The Year Of The World Games Sports in Lower Silesia

Magdalena Nowakowska, a karate fighter representing Budokan Wrocław club, was named the “Athlete Of The Year Of The World Games Sports in Lower Silesia”. Wrocław is the capital of the region. The title was handed over during a Lower Silesia Gala of Sports, attended by almost 800 athletes, officials and supporters in the National Forum of Music.

Magdalena Nowakowska is the current Polish Karate Champion (minus 50kg category) and a former medalist of some World Cups. She received 11,026 votes in a poll organized by a leading regional newspaper Gazeta Wrocławska.

Wojciech Kowalski, representing Orienteering, was ranked second. He won five medals during Polish Championship in 2015. He won a bronze medal in relay during Military World Cup in South Korea and came 4th in the individual run during the same event, too. Wojciech Kowalski achieved 7,693 votes.

Grzegorz Mazur, member of the Polish American Football national team and a key figure in the Panthers Wrocław club came third with 6,100 votes.

The World Games 2017 Ambassador Maciej Janowski - captain of the Polish national team of speedway - who’s fantastic performances enabled Wrocław’s Betard Sparta club to reach the Polish League final last year, came third in the main category of the Gala: “Athlete of the year in Lower Silesia”. He was only overpassed by discus throw World Champion Piotr Małachowski and Alicja Tchórz – swimmer, who won silver medal during the European Championship last year. They came first and second respectively.

The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
