Rugby
The discipline Rugby Sevens was on the programme from 2001 to 2013.
Rugby Union is a handling and kicking ball game using an oval ball and played with 15 players per side. When a ball is passed between players, it must be passed backwards. A player who is tackled has to release the ball. The play is often very fluid, but there are a number of standard play situations and in this way the sport is quite complex.
Rugby Sevens is played with 7 players per side, with a shorter duration, each half lasting seven minutes.
Points are scored in four ways: by scoring a try (5 points), where the ball is grounded over the opponents’ goal-line within a marked area; a conversion (2) where the ball is kicked over the crossbar between the posts after a try has been scored; a penalty kick (3) after an infringement by the other side; a drop goal (3) where a ball is kicked on the half-volley and it crosses the bar between the posts.
Rugby is a fast and tough game requiring good strength and fitness; it is played by both men and women. Good tactics can play a big part in a team’s success.
