At 54 years old, Yukako Fukushima of Japan continues to dominate the world of powerlifting, a sport typically associated with athletes in their prime physical years.

A pioneer in the sport, Fukushima has achieved extraordinary success, with 8 World Open Powerlifting titles under her belt, and a career spanning more than two decades. As she prepares for her 7th appearance at The World Games in Chengdu 2025, the Japanese powerlifter is an embodiment of resilience, longevity, and an example of to us all.

Fukushima’s journey in powerlifting began in 1999 with her first world championship. Her career reached a new milestone in 2001 at The World Games in Akita, Japan, a defining moment that sparked a deep connection with the global competition.

“The World Games is a special place for me,” Fukushima reflected, recognising the influence the event has had on her career. “I worked hard with my husband, who is also my coach, to make it happen. I never imagined that this would turn into a journey lasting over 20 years.”

What sets Fukushima apart is not only her longevity but her ability to remain at the top of her sport into her 50s. Winning her 8th World Open Powerlifting title at age 54 is a testament to her dedication.

“I maintain my competitive edge thanks to the support of my family, teammates, and colleagues,” she shared. “But more than anything, it’s my love for powerlifting that keeps me going.”

Over the course of her career, Fukushima has witnessed significant changes in the powerlifting landscape, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted training possibilities and international competitions. Despite these challenges, Fukushima remained motivated, adapting to the circumstances by finding alternative ways to maintain her fitness.

“During the pandemic, training facilities in Japan were closed, and it became difficult to compete internationally,” she recalled. “But I found things I could do and kept my spirits up, never giving up.”

With her upcoming appearance in 2025, she aims to not only compete but to inspire younger powerlifters. “My goal for The World Games 2025 is to prepare well and enjoy the special stage of the Games. That gives me the greatest happiness,” she explained.

“I am very impressed by the enthusiasm of young athletes and their dedication to research and improvement. The message I want to share with them is that steady effort leads to great results.”

Despite the numerous titles and medals, her approach to powerlifting remains grounded. “Even if I win many medals, my feelings as an individual have not changed. I will continue to grow through powerlifting,” she said with a modest tone.

At an age when most athletes may begin to slow down, she proves that passion, dedication, and a love for the sport can push the boundaries of what is possible.

Whatever happens next year, Fukushima's legacy is already firmly cemented in the sport's history.
