The World Games Athlete of June 2023: Anatolii Novopismennyi

published on 3 July, 2023

Congratulations to Anatolii Novopismennyi from Ukraine, IWGA Athlete of the Month for June 2023!

The 27-year-old athlete was best lifter overall at his most recent competition, the World Classic Open Powerlifting Championships in Malta in June 2023, organized by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). On stage in Malta he won his third IPF title and he set new Squat & Total IPF World Records.

Anatolii Novopismennyi squatted 362.5 kilograms (799.2 pounds) on his final attempt. The champion weighed 104 kilos at the competition, moving 3.5 times his body weight on his third attempt. Being already the world record holder, the favourite of the Championships surpassed himself. If you add up his results in the squad, deadlift and bench press, you get 940 kilos - almost a ton, or one Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. After nine valid attempts, these 940 kilos were also a new world record. To make it clear how much the Ukrainian dominates the 105-kilo weight category, it is worth taking a look at the runner-up: the second-placed Emil Norling from Sweden lifted 35 kilos less.

Anatolii Novopismennyi's success was an exclamation mark when it comes to looking forward to The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, People’s Republic of China. At the Annual General Meeting of IPF, held in conjunction with the championships in Malta, it was announced that even Classic Powerlifting will be in the programme of TWG 2025. The athletes have been asking for it for a long time. Classic or Raw Powerlifting means un-equipped. In this version, just a few items such as a belt, wrist and knee sleeves are allowed as equipment. Anatolii Novopismennyi won his gold in this discipline that will have its debut at The World Games 2025.

As The World Games Athlete of the Month, Anatolii Novopismennyi will receive a diploma and a branded gift.
