The International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS) has partnered with The World Games (TWG) since the 2005 Games in Duisburg Germany, providing onsite sports chiropractic care to help athletes prevent injuries and achieve optional performance. Equality is at the heart of their vision.

“Every athlete deserves access to sports chiropractic, and free chiropractic care can create a more equitable playing field,” said Simon Lawson, chair of the International Sporting Federations Commission, describing FICS service at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Before TWG sporting events even began in Birmingham, Alabama, the FICS team was on the ground and available to help. Some athletes traveled upwards of 40 hours to arrive in Alabama, and many needed soft-tissue massages and other treatment to ease cramped muscles and alleviate fatigue.

Bradley Sandler, FICS president, says the need for these services is evident in the demand for care. “By day two of the Games here in Birmingham, we had already helped 500 athletes. I expect we’ll serve thousands over the coming week.”

The organization has more than 3,500 members worldwide, with 54 members currently serving at The World Games in Birmingham on a volunteer basis. Members must hold a degree from an accredited institution and have earned an international certification in sports chiropractic services.

Lottie Langhoff, FICS chief games commissioner, knows there are many misconceptions about sports chiropractics. “A common belief is that you need to be injured before you seek our support, but that’s far from the truth. We help athletes prepare for competition and aid in their healing after performing, with the goal of preventing injury altogether. It involves a lot of preventative maintenance on the body; it’s more than just backs and bones.”

The best part about the partnership between FICS and The World Games is the accessibility of services. Sports chiropractors can be found at every TWG venue during event hours, no appointment is necessary, and all services are free of charge. While some athletes may travel to The World Games with a full team of healthcare professionals to care for them, other nations aren’t equipped to provide those services. FICS knows that their work is critical to giving athletes an equal opportunity to stay healthy and perform at their best, regardless of financial means.
“Our services are a true value-add for ALL athletes. We’re prepared to serve everyone who need us,” said Sandler.

Lawhorn echoed the sentiment. “We want to express our sincere gratitude to the International World Games Association and the athletes who entrust us with their care. It’s humbling to serve these athletes and help them meet their potential on the field or on the track.”
