On-Time Award

During a ceremony for the best Norwegian athletes of 2014, the powerlifter Carl Yngvar Christensen (24) received his Tissot watch for being IWGA Athlete of Month in November. The awards took place in Hamar/Norway. 

On behalf of IWGA President José Perurena, the Treasurer of the International Powerlifting Federation, Dietmar Wolf handed over the prize, engraved with “IGWA Athlete of the Month”. The strongest man ever in IPF history received the certificate of honor together with the Tissot watch. Tissot is the IWGA partner for the monthly award of the best athlete in one of The World Games sports.

Carl Yngvar Christensen is the first powerlifter to lift a combined total of 1,200 kg, as well as earn the highest number of points based on the Wilks Formula. Currently, he is the European Champion in Powerlifting with 1200 kg, and the World Champion with 1230 kg. He has been World and European Champion several times. He also won the Gold Medal in Cali, Colombia, at The World Games 2013.

After a brief award ceremony during the celebration of the best Norwegian athletes, Carl Yngvar Christensen said: “I feel honored that I was selected as IWGA Athlete of the Month for November 2014. The World Games are the most important event a powerlifter can compete in. It was a wonderful experience to take part in The World Games in Cali. I look forward that I will be able to compete again in the next edition in Wroclaw 2017.” He added: “Receiving this award will boost my motivation to achieve even more in my career.”

Dietmar Wolf, who is also Carl Yngvar Christensen’s coach, explained: “Norway is well known for Winter sports. But powerlifting has become more and more popular in our country. Meanwhile we receive a lot of recognition even from the Olympic federations.”

The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
