Today, 4 April 2025, the International World Games Association (IWGA) President José Perurena celebrates his 80th birthday. Perurena, a former Spanish Canoe Sprint athlete, has dedicated his life to sport. He served as President of the International Canoe Federation until 2021, when he stepped aside to concentrate on his role as IWGA President.
Perurena was elected as IWGA President in 2014 during the SportAccord Convention in Belek, Turkey, after serving a four-year mandate on the IWGA Executive Committee from 2010 to 2014. He was re-elected in 2018 and again in May 2023 with an overwhelming majority of 93%.
Under his leadership, the IWGA Headquarters moved from the United States to Lausanne, Switzerland, and the professional team has grown significantly. A renewed Memorandum of Understanding with the International Olympic Committee was signed in 2016, strengthening ties between the organisations.
Perurena has overseen significant developments, including the establishment of an Athletes’ Committee to enhance athlete engagement, and the launch of The World Games Series, a 3-5 day multi-sport event designed to maintain fan interest and provide athletes with increased global exposure between the main events. Perurena has also intensified cooperation with National Olympic Committees and National Sports Organisations.
Looking ahead, Perurena is focused on the 12th edition of The World Games, scheduled for 7-17 August 2025 in Chengdu, China. He has expressed confidence in the preparations, stating, "Preparations for The World Games 2025 are going in the right direction in all aspects."
As he celebrates this milestone, The World Games Family extends their heartfelt congratulations to President Perurena, acknowledging his unwavering dedication and significant contributions to the world of sports.
