IWGA Athlete of the Year 2016, Muaythai fighter Sofia Olofsson received her trophy yesterday at an award ceremony organised in conjunction with the ARISF/IWGA/AIMS dinner at the SportAccord Convention in Aarhus, Denmark.

Olofsson (SWE) won the title convincingly in an online vote where she received over 39 % of the votes. IWGA President José Perurena handed over the Athlete of the Year trophy and a Tissot watch to Olofsson, double World Champion and European Champion in Muaythai in 2016. President Perurena praised the athlete for her outstanding results both in the sport and in the fan vote for Athlete of the Year.

Sofia Olofsson thanked the IWGA and her fans for this recognition. She further extended her thanks to her federation IFMA Muaythai and thanked them for their strong support. She concluded her thank you speech by saying that she is very much looking forward to The World Games, and her aim is to continue the success: she aims for gold this summer in Wroclaw!

The World Games 2017 take place 20-30 July in Wroclaw, Poland, and Muaythai is for the first time one of the 27 official sports at the Games.

The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
