Not one, but two host cities will introduce themselves at this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International World Games Association (IWGA) on Monday, 18 April 2016. As the 37 IWGA member federations gather in Lausanne Switzerland, Gzregorz PyzalkaSports Director of the Wroclaw, Poland, Local Organizing Committee (WOC), the next host city, will inform delegates+ about the preparations for the 10th edition of the multi-sport event in 2017.  The City of Birmingham/Alabama, will make the presentation as the host of TWG 2021 to the delegates from member federations.

With a view to the AGM José Perurena states: “We have quite a number of issues on the agenda. Our member federations have to decide about the revision of our constitution. The changes are not major, but the appointed commission has proposed some updates to ensure good governance and compliance with Swiss law, following the move of our office from the USA.”

One of the most pleasant duties for IWGA President José Perurena: he will award Mwai Kumwenda as IWGA Athlete of the Year 2015. On behalf of the netball player from Malawi Molly Rhone, President of the International Netball Federation, will receive the trophy dedicated Mwai Kumwenda. The Athlete (or Team) of the Year was elected by online voting from 1 until 31 January. Supporters and friends of The World Games could cast a vote for their preferred top athlete / team of 2015. The shortlist comprised the 18 athletes / teams nominated by the IWGA member federations.

At this year’s AGM there will be no election.

MoU with the IOC on Tuesday

On Tuesday the IWGA will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the IOC. José Perurea states about the content: The new Memorandum of Understanding will be much more specific than the one that was signed in 2000. Recommendation 6 of the Olympic Agenda 2020 called for “closer cooperation regarding the sport programme composition and their respective evaluations”. The MoU describes how the two organizations can work together as a team on communication, promotion and programmes. Another example: The IOC will provide its expertise when needed. I would like to thank Dr Thomas Bach for helping us to become such an important part of the Olympic movement.”

The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
