Cocom Meeting in Wroclaw: Setting Milestones for an Outstanding Event

“Wroclaw is on its way to preparing an outstanding event,” said Joachim Gossow, CEO of the International World Games Association after the recent Coordinating Committee meeting (CoCom) in preparation for The World Games 2017 (20 – 30 July 2017) in Poland. Representatives of International World Games Association discussed with the Local Organizing Committee the next milestones on the “Road to Wroclaw” in the host city for the 10th edition of The World Games.

IWGA cocom meeting WroclawThe IWGA delegation was led by President José Perurena and IWGA’s CEO Joachim Gossow, with. Vice-President Max Bishop and Chantal Boehi, IWGA General Manager also attending. The WOC delegation was headed by its President, Marcin Przychodny, and Deputy President, Adam Roczek.

On the first day of the CoCom, the Mayor of Wroclaw, Rafal Dutkiewicz, expressed his confidence that WOC could deliver the best World Games ever. Representatives from the Polish Ministry of Sports & Tourism, Ms. Urszula Jankowska (General Counsellor at the  Department of Elite Sports) and Mr. Andrzej Banasiak (Advisor to the Minister of Sport) as well as Ms. Joanna Huzarska-Tomaszewska, Senior Manager for Olympic Logistics and International Relations at the Polish Olympic Committee, re-affirmed their full support for the 10th edition of this multisport event.

The heads of the different departments took turns to present the current status of the city’s preparations of the event that will be held next summer. Opening and closing ceremonies, promotion, communication, transport, security and broadcasting issues were explained and discussed during two days of intensive meetings. The IWGA representatives also had an opportunity to visit different venues, such as the airport at Szymanow which will be used for the Air Sports competitions next year.

Marcin Przychodny said after the meeting. “With one year to go to The World Games, we are happy with the progress made in all areas of the organization. We are entering a crucial phase of the preparations. We are happy to have the opportunity to benefit from IWGA’s experience and knowledge. It is essential. We have set an ambitious goal and we are aiming to achieve these goals.” 

The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
