Athlete of the Month: Vewart Comta, Thailand
Congratulations to Vewart Comta, IWGA Athlete of the Month for August 2015. The Muaythai fighter from Thailand won the gold medal (weight class 57 kg) at the IFMA Muaythai Royal World Cup in Bangkok. He became the first athlete to qualify for The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw/Poland. Finally, the Jury, made up of all Technical Officials of IFMA, awarded the King’s Trophy to Thailand and Vewart Comta for most outstanding performance in the Senior Male category.
Qualification for The World Games follows a simple principle: only the top athletes or teams in every sport or discipline qualify for participation. IFMA criteria defined: the gold medalists in the different weight classes at the 2015 Royal World Cup will be nominated by the Muaythai Federation (IFMA) for the multi-sport event in Wroclaw/Poland.
Vewart Comta was the first winner of the final day and for this reason the first qualified athlete for TWG 2017. It was a tight race because Sofi Olofsson (weight class 54 kg) from Sweden finished her final fight just 20 minutes later. She became the first woman to qualify for the event in Wroclaw. She was selected to be awarded the King’s trophy in the Senior Women category. Both are the first of around 3600 athletes from about 100 countries, who will strive for gold in 2017.
Vewart Comta will get the chance to follow Kannika Limwanich and Suphannee Wongsut who won the first and only gold medals for Thailand in The World Games’ history. The two athletes competed in Women's Boules Sports Pétanque Doubles Team at TWG2009 in Kaoshiung /Chinese Taipei.
