The Swiss Floorball legend Matthias Hofbauer has ended his playing career after 23 years. Hofbauer has represented Switzerland in all Men’s World Floorball Championships since 2000, and at The World Games in 2017. In the Floorball world historically dominated by Swedes and Finns, Swiss Hofbauer is the all-time top scorer in the World Floorball Championships! To celebrate his long and outstanding career, he has been chosen as The World Games Athlete of April 2020!
Matthias Hofbauer, 39, has played in 10 Men’s World Floorball Championships and has not missed a single one since 2000. With the Swiss national team he has won seven World Championship bronze medals, and a historic silver medal at The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland. Hofbauer has played 57 World Championships matches, and he is the all-time top scorer of the World Floorball Championships with 97 points (48 goals, 49 assists). In the 2004 World Championships in Zürich and Kloten, Hofbauer was the top scorer with 22 points and got selected for the All-Star Team. He also won the Champions Cup with his club SV Wiler-Ersigen in 2005.
Hofbauer is a legend both internationally and in Switzerland. He played 565 matches in the Swiss NLA (debut in 1997) and scored 1073 points during his playing career (511 goals and 562 assists). He has also won the Swiss Cup three times and he is a 10-time Swiss champion.
After the Men’s WFC 2018 in Prague, Matthias Hofbauer announced that he would bring his national team career to an end. He still continued in the Swiss NLA with SV Wiler-Ersigen. The team made it to this year’s Champions Cup in Ostrava and took home second place.

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The 11th edition of The World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 7-17 July 2022. 3,600 athletes from over 30 sports and 100 countries will take part in The World Games.
