A big step towards Birmingham

A big step towards Birmingham

published on 25 June, 2018

On the road to Birmingham we are heading for the next milestone. From 3rd to 4th October 2018 the first Competition Managers Meeting for TWG 2021 will set down the framework for cooperation between IWGA, the Birmingham Organisers (BOC) and the International Federations. The official invitation, jointly sent by BOC and IWGA, will be out in the next few days.

  1. According to the Rules of The World Games, Competition Managers appointed by the International Federation take care of cooperation with the BOC in running the event at the venue. This includes numerous duties before and during the event. The Competition Manager is authorised by the International Federation to handle matters concerning their sport. He or she remains as Competition Manager until the end of The World Games 2021.

The two-day meeting in October also offers the opportunity to take a look at the venue proposed by the team in Birmingham, and to discuss initial details with regard to the requirements for the respective sport or disciplines. The basis for this will be the detailed sports programme that the IWGA board will adopt in the autumn.

After it was announced in April what sports are on the programme, IWGA and the participating IFs will now compile the detailed programme for the eleventh edition of The World Games. Many fruitful discussions have already taken place in advance, in order to take the wishes of the federations into account as far as possible. Criteria among others taken into account when making decisions are the availability of suitable venues, adherence to the framework in terms of the number of athletes, and the expectations of potential TV partners.

Following the definition of the detailed sports programme, an initial provisional timetable is drawn up. This plan must then also be coordinated with numerous partners - including the host broadcaster and those planning TV marketing. The member federations will receive initial information on the state of preparation at the beginning of September when the BOC issues Bulletin #1.

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The 11th edition of The World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 15-25 July 2021. 3,600 athletes from over 30 sports and 100 countries will take part in the Games.

The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
