Congratulations to IWGA Athlete of the Month, March 2017, World Snooker Champion Ng On Yee from Hong Kong!
In the World Women’s Snooker Championship in March in Singapore, Ng On Yee, 26, first beat the 11-time World Champion and world number one Reanne Evans (GBR) 5-4 in the semi-finals in the morning, before then winning the final in the afternoon 6-5 against India’s Vidya Pillai.
This is the first time the championships have been held in Asia, and Ng On Yee was excited to win the title again – she was also World Champion in 2015. “I was very nervous, and my coach just told me to stay in the present. Not in the future or in the past, but present. I think I did that,” she says after the long day with two very exciting matches.
The victory also means that On Yee is qualified for The World Games 2017 – indeed as one of the last qualifiers! Qualification for The World Games finished at the end of March, but some sports have so far given the spots to countries, and not yet to individual athletes. Final entries will be made by the end of May.
The World Games 2017 take place 20–30 July 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland, with 31 sports and more than 4,000 athletes from more than 100 countries taking part.
